tired from now on "romantic" lp

blast from the past!  TFNO were a florida band from the mid 90s......soundwise this would be what season to risk would have sounded like if they had opted to play noisy, frantic metal tinged hardcore instead of noise rock.....this was also the first lp released(1995) on the prolific no idea label............var picked a good one with this band..........

anyways kick back and let 'er rip!

judoboy cd

these guys where another of those heavyass french bands from the turn of the century that drew alot of inspiration from the  geman scene............think morser/systral with a touch of one eyed god prophecy......super intense....decent dudes too...i used to talk to a dude from this band named romain intermittantly over a couple years...this album was co-released on a half dozen different labels....fucking crazy.....

chec it out!

marjan crash ":cruise dakota"

hardcore? noise rock? grunge? shoegazer? i cant decide which of these tags fits the sound displayed by this band, and ive been listening to this album for years.........marjan crash was another of those atomic action bands that was from rhode island or conneticut or somewhere up that way and they seemed to have played shows with bands like glazed baby and shiv......the music is  pretty noisy and unique, the vocals, when they arent buried behind the music, sound like the guy from type o negative on a morphine drip..........not the best part of the band by a longshot....anyways this came out in 1994 and is still pretty original even today........by all means check this out:

unpersons "IV-self portrait"

the unpersons have been creating their own unique disturbing, mindfucking hardcore since 1997.......one of those savannah georgia area bands (along with damad/kylesa/baroness (who they have a split with) who take a southern rock influernce and twist the shit out of it till its almost unrecognizable.......unlike kylesa/baroness, these guys have for the most part flown under the radar for the entirety of their carreers.......this particular record came out on life is abuse in 2004 (i think) and is basically two songs, one 15 or so minutes long, the other, which is basically a continuation of the first song, is 6-7 minutes long........really good, really complex, yet raw stuff here......less frantic than their full lenght but not lacking in intensity by any means...

acrobat down "beaver falls excepted" "7

this was one of their earlier releases, came out on crank in 1997........"beaver falls excepted" is still my all time favorite track by them........two songs of some of the best poppy melodic rock ever recorded..............could dance all night to this..........

Thursday, March 25, 2010

oh man...............classic

best show ever............especially this episode...............

king of the hill APREESH day!

bluid "7

bluid were an intense chaotic hardcore band from italy that featured members of with love...........musically this was very much instep with what was going on in the mid-late 90s......they where one of those bands that reminded you of alot of other bands doing the thick metallic thing with emo leanings but dident quite sound enough like any one of them to be a total plagarism..................groundwork, uranus, unbroken, i hear hints of all of them here but nowhere is the influence overpowering...they have their own thing going on and its fucking ferocious........this was their first and to my knowledge only "7............they also had a cd-r of new songs that came out maybe a year or two after this was released.........even more metallic.............ill post that one  soon...........for now enjoy the sound and the fury........

quixote s/t cd

another one of those albums ive been meaning to get to, but have either kept forgetting to post or have been putting off........anyways this was their first full length, more rough, jangly and much less focused than the later "protests of the weak" but still having a certain intensity and intimacy.........i actually liked them better live during this era of their existence rather than later on after mike sword/gaurd joined the band.....however you cant really tell the difference between paul wartella's drumming on this record and that of sword on protests of the weak.....both where/are fucking great drummers........anyways heres the tastetest:

acrobat down "re:dereliction"

lets get to the basics: acrobat down was a band from denver, colorado that existed from 1996-2000 and played some of the best goddamn poppy rockin indie rock this side of the treepeople, if you took said band of idaho miscreants, cleaned up their style, made their songs even catchier and threw in a keyboard youd have something pretty close to what acrobat down was..........if this shit doesnt pump you up and get you dancing id have to check you for a pulse.....all the saddle creek/conner oberst bullshit in the world doesnt have shit on this band......expect more releases from these guys to be posted soon...........oh and for anyone who remembers/cares, this band was ex small dog frenzy (singer aaron hobbs)

brent barn discography

another overlooked gem from scandanavia here........brent barn have been plugging away in oslo, norway since 1997 and remain one of the best bands  from that country..........they started out with a melodic semicrusty type of sound and progressed into a more noisy emoish thing that is pretty unique.....i can hear hints of bass driven acts such as kurt and shotmaker as well as some am repish styles that bring to mind bands like guzzard or even janitor joe, however the 90s emo influences win out in the end..........this is all their recorded material to date.......the 1997 demo and songs recorded in 1999, 2008 and 2009......enjoy!

half visconte "was it fear"

this record was a little more on the  laid back, expirimental side than the first........they can still get intense when they want to though........even more in the three mile pilot vein than the first ep......some of these songs sound like theyd be right at home on "songs from an old town we once knew"...ywt another hidden gem of a record from arizona  a state that produced some fucking great music in the 90s-early 2000s

(in case your confused and think that i may have already posted this record, i havent, i posted the ep last month, i just had to switch the artwork to this record for this post)

calumet hecla "alloy"

ive been meaning to get to this one for a while now.......calumet hecla are
a band from wocester ma by way of northern michigan...........they play a dreamy, spacey math-post rock that is still noisy and powerful......not really all that many bands i could compare this to........just really unique and great.....mostly female vocals aside from a couple songs where the guitarist takes over......i was addicted to tis record for months on end and still listen to it semi-religiously....theyve been around since at least 2002-2003 and have done a bit of touring, including a midwest tour with sah in 2004 and a jaunt in brazil last year, still kinda dumbstruck that this band isnt more well known than they are.........anyways they are easily new england's best kept secret.......do yourself a big favor and check this out!

season to risk s/t 1992

the first lp by this legendary KC/lawrence KS band........powerful noisy groove with a few grunge tendencies (steve tulipana's vocals especially) not quite as ferocious as"in a perfect world" but still pretty aggressive and ugly.....they started in 1989 and to my knowledge are still a functioning unit, despite the decade long hiatus since 2001's "the shattering" although im more of a fan of the first 3 lps more than  the direction they took on the shattering, everything theyve recorded is better than the offerings of most bands.....love to hear new material from them, especially after going on a week long binge of their earlier stuff....criminally overlooked.....in the same league as craw/dazziling killmen/today is the day/jesus lizard as far as influential bands go....

Thursday, March 18, 2010

john holmes "el louso suavo"

another UK band from the 90s that got lost in the shuffle........john holmes played some dirty ugly hardcore with some obvious noise rock influences.........all you cats out there that dig bands like 16, deadguy, hell no, born against and unsane are gonna eat this shit up with a spoon.........do it up lads.........

american heritage "why everyone gets cancer"

this was one of those bands that started out with a great formula but then over time decided to fix what wasent broken and reduce themselves to a merely average band in the process..........american heritage hail from chicago and are made up of the scattered bits of past chitown bands like gauge, grout villa and brass knuckles for tough guys. they formed in 1998 and put out two lps on the british label rosewood union, followed by albums on various labels such as troubleman, escape artist and translation loss......early on (first 3 lps) they played hard hitting complex instrumental stuff that i could only term "chaos-math" (a term of my own coinage, yea, yea, tell me how dumb it is later) this was their second lp, released in 1999 and there are a million things going on at once in every song..........i saw them live with tristeza and quixote in kalamazoo around thetime this record came out......its like each member was playing a different song with his instrument...it was crazy but somehow the intensity was lost on me that night.......i saw them again in 2002 with haymarket riot and they seemed louder and more metallic then and i was into then.........a few years later they released a record on escape artist and decided to add vocals to the mix and play  average chaotic metal/hardcore....this is where the "fixing what wasent broken' part comes in.......not sure why they went that route......anyways this is/was a vastly underrated album and everyone should take a listen or 3.

lvmen "mondo"

these guys are easily one of the top 5 bands to have ever come out of europe........forming in the czech republic in the mid-late 90s, they have 4 lps, all of them sonic masterpeices, over their  12 -odd years of existence......for some reason i keep wanting to draw paralells between them and craw....... both bands have a penchant for writing huge overarching dischordant songs full of noise and calm and odd lyrical ideas and  years pass between new lps for both bands.........lvmen's live shows are supposedly legendary...with all the movie clips/projector images going while the band plays....i guess kinda similar to what neurosis was doing in the 90s....bands like ISIS wish they could create soundscapes as enthralling as this........if i had the money and the will to put in the effort of getting these guys to tour the states i would buy them all plane tickets tommorow.......it kinda sucks that they arent very well known at all on this side of the pond because people would be blown away.........all of their albums are fantastic but this one is my personal favorite. im not sure theyve ever recorded a song that was below 4 or 5 minutes long........

stale s/t lp

after sog called it quits, stale arose in its place........this is their first lp, released in 1996 and the first release on alveran records, a label that would later be famous for releasing thick metallic moshcore bands like six reasons to kill and absidia......this basically picks up where sog left off and adds more noise and jazzy influences to the mix.....some songs turn it improv jam sessions that last 13 minutes or so.....its alot harsher and noisier than the band's later work.........very very great obscure bandthat more people should check out......

SOG lp

germay's love records released some of the best hardcore/emo records by some of the best bands of the 90s..........assay, rusty james, springhill, an this forotten gem.............sog (not zog...sorry all you christian identity/aryan nations/militia types) was a german band that played some unique rough emotive hardcore with an almost jazzy approach in the guitar.........members of this band went to to form stale a band whos sound was clearly a continuation of what sog was doing. anyways check it out!

prone "10

this was one of the many sideprojects of  bernd of the german powerviolence powerhouse stack. very noisy frantic grind in the vein of discordance axis or bands of that ilk.....very good for what it is.....recorded in 2001 or thereabouts.

submerge/crowpath split 7

crowpath never fail to amaze and  "theives" is no exception to that rule.......maybe one of the best songs ive ever heard by this band..........instead of the hectic chaos they opt for alower pace, dont let that fool you though, the guitars  and the low end are still earshredding and the vocals remain crushing.............france's submerge returns with 3 fast d-beat-esque  songs that remind me of many a scandicrust band.. a bit of a change in direction from the cd which was chaotic and noisy...this is .reall good though..........

inane "zietraffer"

yet another german band bringing it fucking hard..........this was their first lp.........more frantic and intense than alot of their bremen bretheren....there is a bit of an overall "canadian" feel to the music, some paralells to bands like one eyed god prophecy and uranus can be drawn.....in any case this shit fucking rules and im actively searching out the other lp (kill em and grill em) if this is any indication of what they are capable of......

quagmire "quiet is not loud"

love shellac but know all their songs by heart? well fear not! sweden's quagmire are here to satisfy your shellac-without-being-shellac fix..........this is vintage "at action park" sounding noise/groove with a post rock edge.........steve albini will hear this and think "when did we record that?".....really really good stuff.

submerge "album"

submerge are (where?) a band from rheims france who play(ed?) some thick chaotic metallic hardcore/grindcore...theyve been around since at least the earlt 2000s and have done splits with such bands as ananda, crowpath, dead for a minute and karras.....this shit is good....just wish the songs werent so short.......france is (or was) running neck and neck with germany in the "country-that-makes-dischordant-metallic-hardcore-to-melt-your-brain-to" contest.....

prema discography

the only krishnacore band i ever liked............prema was a great band.....they started out as a pretty typical early 90s rockin hardcore band  that evolved into a tight noisy groove by the time "drivel" came out.............this contains both pebble and drivel....i much prefer drivel to their earlier stuff......

rats into robots "a column of smoke by day, a pillar of fire by night"

after to dream of autumn called it a day in 2003, guitarist adam lowe founded rats into robots. before id actually heard this band i was told that they sounded like a mix of unbroken and uranus, well sometimes thats not to far off the mark.  harsh, moody, frantic, atmospheric hardcore with a definate metallic edge. this came out on slave union in 2004, other than this they also recorded a split with textbook traitors (which ive never heard........to this day ive never heard the textbook traitors cd either) this is damn good stuff so listen up!

my lai "paper tiger" "7

this was their swan song.........last 3 songs on aone sided "7.......my lai occupied the intersection between deepsix/slap-a-ham and gravity records........grindy and chaotic, but with a somewhat "arty" flair......they made some of the most exciting complex music in chicago in the 90s.....its too bad no one knows who the fuck they are now.......kids, put away your paramore records and download this:

ps: thats my my lai shirt.

beltaine "crowning the caged kid"

this band existed in the mid 90s and hailed from rhode island.......chunky crunchy "emo" that was basically a louder, beefier sounding ordination of aaron.....members went on to the chinese stars and a few other bands im forgetting right now....."if i fly too high" is the definate highlight track here
